New Communication Options With IP Webcams

Webcam is the short term for web camera. A webcam is a device that enables communication through the web with a clear IP web address. It incorporates telephone and video communication where one can virtually see who he/she is talking with.

An IP webcam can be connected to a computer with Internet connection through the USB port. It can also be connected to a network through Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

A webcam is made up of an image sensor, otherwise known as a lens. There are various lenses with the most popular being the plastic lens. This is easy to handle as it can be screwed either in or out in setting the camera’s focus. There are also lenses that are fixed and do not allow for adjustments to be made. Webcams provide VGA resolution video with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Some modern webcams have the capacity to produce video in megapixel resolutions, going up to 320 by 240 pixel video at 120 frames per second.

A webcam features built-in microphones to make video telephony more convenient. Other supporting electronics are also incorporated for functionality. The supporting electronics read images from the webcam lens of one computer and transmit the same to the host computer. Most computer operating systems such as Mac OS X, Windows Vista and Linux have in-built USB video device class (UVC) drivers and do not require the installation of proprietory drivers. As computers require relevant software to be installed for a particular prgram to run, so is with the webcam. IP webcam software needs to be installed for the webcam to operate.

The most popular area where webcams are used is in video telephony. This is where a computer acts as both a video recorder and a phone. The computer is literally transformed into a video conferencing station. This is employed in Internet messenger programs such as Skype, Yahoo and Windows Live Messengers. Other software programs allow for video recording.

One-on-one communication over the Internet has now taken root with most PC owners now using IP webcams for communication. These webcams produce high quality video, coupled with new features such as automatic lighting controls, enhancements, face tracking and autofocus. These assist users in getting ease of use, which has made webcams very popular.

Sign language users have found webcams to be very vital tools. The deaf and those with hearing and speech difficulties can communicate amongst themselves or with those who are ok through sign language. Webcams are also used by sign language interpreters to relay messages to people with such difficulties. Some wireless operators have even gone further to offer free sign language gateways through the use of wireless IP webcams.

Security is one of the areas that has benefited from employment of IP webcams. They are employed as security cameras. Special security software is available. These allow security agents to monitor movement and sound within an establishment for prompt action. Such are also recorded and can be accessed later.

Webcams are flexible and are reasonably priced. This makes them the lowest cost effective form of video telephony.
